Building Innovation: A Custom Parrallel Hybrid Passenger Vessel
This year’s All American Marine holiday party featured a show-stopping centerpiece: a custom LEGO model of their new vessel for Harbor Breeze Cruises, an innovative parallel hybrid passenger ferry. The partnership between Bellingham SeaFeast and All American Marine started many months ago and this unveiling was a crowd favorite. Designed and built by Brad Bergman, a competitor from LEGO Masters Season 4, the LEGO version faithfully captured the sleek lines and innovative features of the real vessel. Brad spent months designing the model, incorporating intricate details. During the party, employees were invited to add their personal touch to the model by creating their own custom mini-figurines, representing their roles in building this groundbreaking ferry. The collaborative effort brought the model to life, symbolizing the teamwork that drives innovation at All American Marine.
The real-life M/V Sea Change is an engineering marvel. At 73 feet in length, this zero-emissions ferry can carry up to 78 passengers and three crew members, cruising at an estimated speed of 21 knots. Its propulsion system is powered by three 120 kW Cummins hydrogen fuel cells, which feed energy into BAE electric motors and XALT lithium-ion batteries for efficient, reliable operation. With a range of two days on 210 kilograms of hydrogen, the Sea Change represents a monumental step forward in sustainable maritime technology. Built by All American Marine for SWITCH Maritime and launched in September 2021, the vessel operates in the California Bay Area, serving as a model for zero-emission transportation and a testament to the possibilities of clean energy.
Brad’s LEGO masterpiece is more than just a fun replica—it’s a tribute to the pioneering work of the All American Marine team and their commitment to innovation. Bellingham SeaFeast is so thrilled to be part of the LEGO Sea Change as a fitting celebration of the vessel and the people who brought it to life.
